Objectives

To understand the basic components and layout of linkages in the assembly of a system machine.

To understand the principles in analyzing the assembly with respect to the displacement, velocity, and acceleration at any point in a link of amechanism.

To understand the motion resulting from a specified set of linkages, design few linkage mechanisms and cam mechanisms for specified outputmotions.

To understand the basic concepts of toothed gearing and kinematics of gear trains and the effects of friction in motion transmission and in machinecomponents.

Degrees of Freedom & Mechanisms Grashof’s law, kinematic inversions of 4 bar mechanism, with applications of each inversion

Kinematic inversions of slider crank mechanism, with applications of each inversion. Problems on quick return mechanisms

Introduction to the graphical method of finding velocity and accelerations of links of a mechanism

Construction of acceleration polygon for simple mechanisms and related polygons

Classification of cams, followers and their related terminologies

Design of cam profiles based on the motion of followers

Law of toothed gearing statement with proof

Spur Gear terminology and definitions

Problems on finding the length of path of contact arc of contact , contact ratio

Epicyclic Gear Trains and related problems

Laws of Friction

Problems on screw jacks

Belt and rope drives, ratio of tight side to slack side tensions

Friction in brakes, Band and Block brakes and related problems
